CHAPTER TWENTY SIX

Leaving the commotion behind, they raced from shadow to shadow, apprehensively eluding anyone on the streets in fear of recognition by a citizen; especially the type who turned crooks in for insignificant monetary rewards.

"I hate ducks," Tegwen muttered to herself as she and Megavolt made their way back to his hideout. Megavolt smiled at her slightly.

"Just ducks?" He asked eagerly.

Tegwen thought for a moment. "No. Mostly ducks."

Megavolt stepped into his hideout before Tegwen. She noticed that the front door of the place was still on the floor where she had accidentally knocked it in.

"You ever gonna fix this?" Asked Tegwen as she stepped on the door to get inside.

"Meh," replied Megavolt, shrugging.

Tegwen followed Megavolt to the far end of the old warehouse, once again running her hand along boxes and crates as she passed them.

The second floor of the warehouse looked to be twice as big as the ground floor, but Tegwen knew that couldn't be the case despite what her eyes insisted.

A sofa and recliner inhabited one corner of the giant room, with a modest sized television strategically placed between them. A table with three chairs stood opposite the sofa and recliner.

Strewn haphazardly across the floor was equipment of all sorts, from large computer-like machines to a variety of small guns. She even saw a few broken toys laying here and there.

"Do you live here?" Tegwen whispered, half hoping Megavolt wouldn't answer.

He flopped down lazily upon the sofa, looking up at his new acquaintance as she surveyed her surroundings. "I sleep here on occasion, if that's what you mean," he replied. "I also have the lighthouse," he added thoughtfully.

Tegwen nodded as if barely listening.

"Hey -- you can have a seat if you want," Megavolt offered, pointing around the room.

Tegwen smiled weakly and opted to sit on the dusty floor a few feet in front of the sofa. For some reason, the thought of sitting or laying on any of Megavolt's furniture made her extremely uncomfortable.

"So," Megavolt stated quietly, "what possessed you to pull a stunt like that?"

"A stunt like what?" Asked Tegwen, mildly surprised that he would ever bring that whole chain of events into a conversation.

"Why did you run out and risk your life to help save a felon?"

Tegwen settled her gaze on Megavolt's sappy grin.
