CHAPTER TWENTY FIVE

Without any further thought, Tegwen began trotting toward the edge of the rooftop. Nearing its ledge and the abyss to the street below, her trot grew to a sprint and she took a flying leap onto the building where Megavolt and Darkwing were grappling. They were too preoccupied to notice her arrival, but the spectators sure weren't. She heard the crowd far below gasp as she overshot her landing, knocking Darkwing onto his stomach.

"Hey!" Cried Darkwing, trying to stand up under Tegwen's weight.

Megavolt stared at Tegwen. "You again?!"

"Come on," insisted Tegwen, clumsily stumbling to her feet.

Megavolt just stared blankly at her. This gave Darkwing enough time to grab his gun.

"Suck gas," Darkwing yelled at her as he pointed the gun. She panicked, thrusting her right foot in an awkward kick in her assailant's direction. Although her attack was far too short to hit its target, it instead connected solidly with the drawn weapon. The unconventional firearm went flying from his hand and hit the ground with a clatter, triggering a shot which sent a plume of blue smoke into the air with a boisterous pop.

Tegwen reached for Megavolt's hand just before the smoke engulfed them and raced for the edge of the roof blindly, dragging the reluctant supervillian behind her.

"Let go of me!" Megavolt cried, trying to free himself of Tegwen's grip.

"Quiet!" Tegwen snapped at Megavolt. "You'll give away our location!"

The smoke was starting to clear as they neared the ledge and Tegwen jumped, hoping there would be a nearby building and a safe landing in their future. Megavolt bellowed and panicked behind her, watching the street fly by many stories below.

"Ssshhh!" Tegwen hissed. She landed with a hard thud on the roof of another building, a shock of pain shooting through her ankles. She didn't even have time to realize how close she was to falling to her death, killing Megavolt alongside her.

"You!" Darkwing yelled from the other building, pointing at them for emphasis. "Villains! Come back!"

Still dragging Megavolt, Tegwen escaped down a recently shattered skylight to safety. She didn't slow to a jog until they had traversed the entire penthouse suite and entered the adjacent hallway.

"Hey . . . Slow down . . ." Megavolt whined. "I can't run that fast . . ."

Tegwen turned around, smiling for a moment. "I did slow down." Then she just stopped. "Come on. I know a way out where we can avoid the mob outside." She led Megavolt toward the elevator right beside the fire exit and pressed its call button, waiting there semi-patiently.

She glanced up at Megavolt. "So, I'm an accomplice to a crime and I've just kidnapped someone . . . I'd say that gets me ten more years. So if the cops catch me, I won't get out until my forty-sixth hatchday, now . . ."

Megavolt looked at her questioningly.

"Never mind," Tegwen blushed.
