CHAPTER TEN

Kayla bumped into Tegwen after the final class of the following school day. They ventured down the main hallway of the math and science building, lined with lockers and teeming with high school students rushing to leave for the day.

"Hey, Teggers!" Kayla greeted Tegwen with a small hug. "How's it hangin'?"

"Please don't use that slang on me," Tegwen cringed.

Kayla gave a halfhearted apology. "Since when do you, oh brainiac, ditch class? Especially this close to finals?"

"Hey, I got it excused." Tegwen flashed a little yellow, square slip of paper before Kayla's eyes. "Mom let me. I needed to sleep in."

The two girls stopped by Kayla's locker briefly. "Don't tell me you were up late studying," Kayla teased.

"Nope," Tegwen replied nonchalantly. "Last night was Mr. McDuck's party."

"Oh, right. Didja stay up past ten or something?"

"Three in the morning."

Kayla slammed her locker shut with a gasp. She turned to Tegwen, her jaw hanging.

"Aaand . . ." Tegwen turned away and continued moseying down the hall. "Fenton was there."

"Whoa, whoa, whoa!" Kayla cried, running to catch up to her Freshman year friend. "Wait! Fenton was there?!"

"Yup." Tegwen glanced at Kayla with a smile. "We hung out together. A little." The she squealed. "For hours!"

"I so can't believe you!"

Tegwen raised an eyebrow as she approached her locker. "Yup. He even walked me home."

"No way, Tegwen. Nuh uh."

With a smirk on her face, Tegwen opened her locker. "And he gave me his jacket when I said I was cold."

Kayla laughed. "You've always been such a terrible liar."

"I'm not lying."

"Well, I still don't believe you."

Tegwen pulled Fenton's jacket out of her locker, raising her eyebrows. "You don't?"

Kayla's jaw dropped, her chocolate eyes bulging. "Issat what I think it is?!"

Tegwen nodded, all smiles. "Oh. . . it's just the jacket Fenton gave me to keep me warm." She hugged it to her chest.
