CHAPTER NINE

"You know, I didn't think Mr. McDuck's party would be so fun." Tegwen kneaded her little black purse in her shaking hands. It hadn't been, either, until she'd rescued him from socialite hell.

"Honestly . . ." Fenton spoke slowly. His voice dropped to a whisper. "Neither did I."

After giggling for a few moments, Tegwen glanced up from her purse. The Dodgers' family estate sprawled out in front of them as they reached the edge of the driveway. A tall gate blocked their access. "Oh, this is it. We're here."

Fenton slowly turned away from Tegwen and she heard him gasp as his head turned up. "This is your place?" He gaped. "You live here? The Dodgers Estate?"

Tegwen nodded. "Well, I am Giffen Dodgers' daughter. I know, it's not much . . . It's no McDuck Manor . . . Or quite as lavish as the famous Gallo residence of St. Canard. But it's home."

Fenton suddenly seemed to snap out of his dazed state. "You know, they say that place is haunted."

Tegwen shivered suddenly, approaching the gate. "Oh?" There was a small keypad with the digits one through nine on it. She quickly punched in a code and the gate started opening.

"You cold?" He asked quietly.

I don't like hearing about ghosts, actually . . . "Yes." Tegwen whispered after a slight hesitation. "A little."

Without skipping a beat, Fenton carefully put his jacket over her shoulders. Tegwen held it closed tightly at the collar.

"Yeah. They say that the ghost of the dead son, James, still walks around the place at night. His sister has supposedly even gotten phone calls from him."

"How creepy!" Tegwen cried, feeling goosebumps rise along her arms. "Do you believe it?"

Fenton shook his head. "I don't go for any of that supernatural stuff."

Tegwen looked at him sadly. "You don't believe in magic?"

He shook his head again. "Not until I see something that would convince me otherwise."

"So then there's a possibility you might change your mind?"

A smile spread across his face as he looked toward the heavens. "Well, maybe, I suppose. I would believe anything was possible if a certain blonde would get the hint just how much I like her."

Tegwen quickly turned away from him, feeling her cheeks warming up again. Fenton always had a way of making her blush. Even the mere mention of his name could cause her cheeks to go rosy.
