CHAPTER SIX

"Ooh! Did you see that?" Kayla gasped, pointing across the cafeteria to a superb conglomeration of pectorals, biceps, broad shoulders, wide smile and the requisite letterman's jacket. Down to the curl of black feathers on his brow, the quarterback of the varsity football team looked every bit the hero that the rest of school's chicks thought he was. All he really needed was a cape, and he'd be the spitting image of Cluck Kent's alter-ego.

Unbelievably, he was starting at the pretty blonde sitting next to Kayla.

"Huh?" Tegwen blinked, glancing up from her container filled with sequins.

"Hey, Tegs! If you pulled your bill from those beads every once in a while, maybe you could get yourself a date."

Tegwen frowned. "'Scuse me?"

Kayla pointed across the cafeteria again silently.

"What?" Tegwen asked impatiently.

"You didn't see Jace staring at you?" Kayla watched Tegwen in disbelief. "What, are you blind?"

"Okay." Tegwen set her thread and needle carefully on the table. "Stop teasing me, Kay. Jace is out of my league. Besides-- he's a quail. I only date mallards." Tegwen frowned at her last comment. I don't care what Magica said. I'm marrying a mallard, and that is that. But . . . why did I say that? Am I trying to change my future from what Magica predicted? How could my soulmate not be a mallard? Am I not supposed to have ducklings or something? This isn't fair! Maybe I can prove Magica wrong. Maybe I can--

"Hey!" Kayla snapped. "Earth to Tegwen! Helloooo?!?"

Tegwen shook her head. "I only date mallards." She repeated firmly.

Kayla sighed. "So . . . What's the dress for?"

"Scrooge McDuck is having a party next week." Tegwen resumed adding sequins to the mid-thigh length skirt. "We've known about it for two months and the night we got the invite, my mother went out and bought this dress for me."

"So, what's the deal with the sequin-thingies?" Kayla dug her paw into the container. Upon seeing Tegwen's glare, she pulled her paw back out with three matted to her fur. She tried to catch them as they all came loose, but her efforts were in vain. Three red sequins found their way to a black sticky spot -- presumably once chewing gum -- on the floor. "This is a gorgeous dress to begin with."

"Thanks," Tegwen said flatly, glancing at the roundish puddle of unrecognizable goo.

"You're welcome," Kayla replied, a warm smile on her face.
