CHAPTER SEVENTY EIGHT

There was a timid knock on the door to Megavolt's hideout. Tegwen looked up from the newspaper with a start. She reluctantly stood from the mattress, realizing Megavolt wouldn't knock on his own door. No one else knew she was there, and certainly she didn't want to deal with the only other member of the Fearsome Five who might drop by to harass her and harangue her roommate. She could easily let the knock go unanswered. Yet she felt compelled to see who was there.

On the other side of the door was someone she didn't expect to see. "Oh!" She gasped. "What're you doing here?"

Bushroot smiled. "I . . . um . . . I actually came to let Megavolt know about a meeting Negaduck wants to have later today. Is he here?"

Tegwen shook her head slowly. "No. He stepped out. Left me all alone. After a night like yesterday, I'm . . . I dunno."

"What's wrong?" Bushroot asked her quickly.

"I want to be alone, but I don't suppose it's a good idea."

After a few moments, Bushroot offered a timid smile. "I don't suppose you want to go get breakfast with me. I'll listen, if you want to talk."

She hesitated. Was there any harm in trading affiliations from one supervillain to another? It was just breakfast, after all. It's not like it means anything more than that. It might be nice to sit down with someone who was at least a little more sane than who she was currently living with. Someone who had not killed her parents. Or wasn't failing to come to her rescue. Or stalking her for some bizarre reason. In fact, going to get breakfast with Bushroot seemed almost normal and nice.

Except, of course, for the fact he was a mutant-plant-duck. But who was she to pass judgment based upon looks?

"Okay," she said simply.

Bushroot blinked, unable to hide his surprise. "What? Really?"

"Sure!" Tegwen found it within her to actually smile at him. "Why not?"

While following Bushroot down the stairs, her mind wandered back to the conversation she'd had with Megavolt the prior night. With a wry smile, she wondered what her old friends in Duckburg would think if they saw her associating with the likes of Dr. Reginald Bushroot.
