![]() CHAPTER SEVENTY FOUR ![]() The inside of the old warehouse didn't find Tegwen any warmer than the dark alley beside it. "Stupid door," she muttered after walking over it. Tegwen hesitated briefly and then sighed. He's obviously never gonna do this. Gathering her strength, she hefted the door up and pushed it back in place with a grunt. That oughtta keep the cold out now. She shivered. Not like it'll help me. I really need some winter clothing . . . More than this stupid jacket. Slowly, Tegwen made her way to the grated metal staircase at the far corner of the first story, feeling her way blindly in the darkness. At least I won't be stepping on any mouse traps! She grinned. In spite of her thought, she found the stairwell, stubbing her foot into the first step. Muttering some obscenities under her breath, Tegwen hobbled up the stairs. "You hafta watch out for that first step," a voice advised softly from the table in the corner. Tegwen glanced at Megavolt, startled. "Yeah," she said wryly. "Thanks for the warning." "I didn't think you'd be coming back." He set a playing card down on the table in front of him. Tegwen realized sadly that he was engrossed in a game of solitaire. She shrugged. "It was really cold at the bridge. You know, with all that water . . ." "I got you something while you were gone." Megavolt motioned to the other corner of the room along that same wall. "A mattress." Tegwen stared at it, bewildered. "'Thought you said you didn't think I was gonna come back." He glanced up at her. "Just in case I was wrong and you came back." After a pause, he continued, "Which you did. So I was wrong." "A mattress." Repeated Tegwen. "You . . . got me a mattress?" Megavolt nodded. "I figured it was more comfortable than the floor." ![]() go back | return to table of contents |
