CHAPTER FORTY

Megavolt noticed how reluctant Tegwen became when they turned to the upscale streets of the city.

"You didn't tell me it was a nice place!" Tegwen cried.

Megavolt shrugged. "It's the Goldeneye. Everyone knows it's a nice place."

Tegwen looked at the club, watching chaser lights blink around a welcome sign in a random pattern. Below the covered awning waited several affluent couples, bathed in the golden and blue light cast by the circling searchlights and the building's own warm glow. The men were in suits and tuxedos, the ladies in their most expensive gowns. And although Tegwen had never been there before, she realized that the who's-who of St. Canard arrived at the Goldeneye simply to be seen hobnobbing with the rest of the social elite.

She glanced down at herself, looking at her own attire beneath the flickering lights. "I'm not dressed right. They won't let me in looking like this."

"You look fine," Megavolt reassured her. "Well, I mean -- you're not underdressed . . . or anything . . ."

Tegwen glanced at him quickly. "You really think so?" She stuttered. I really don't feel like I do . . .

Megavolt nodded. "Yeah, sure, you look okay. They've never once turned me down dressed like this!" He turned to the night club. "Come on, let's go in."

"Fine," Tegwen said with a sigh. "Lead the way."

Tegwen sat on a stool at the bar, resting her head in her hands. What a night, she thought, glancing up at Megavolt as he sat beside her.

The bartender walked over to them, smiling. "Well hi there, chicky." He smiled at Tegwen, polishing a glass.

"Yeah." Tegwen looked up at him.

Megavolt shook his head sadly. "Hey Mitch."

Mitch frowned. "Not goin' so good, eh, Megavolt? I'll go get you a battery. How about your lady-friend here?"

"You have anything good in this place?" Tegwen grumbled, setting her forehead against the bar.

Mitch managed to laugh. "Anything you could possibly want."

She glanced up slowly. "Oh?" I want my parents back. I want my old life back. I want Fenton, damn it!

"Yep!" Mitch punctuated his statement with a decisive nod. "So what'll it be?"

"Lemme think for a sec," Tegwen said.
